Moghancements

Moghancements are a severely undervalued aspect of play in Final Fantasy XI.

It’s important to note that every piece of furniture has four distinctive aspects: an associated element, an elemental strength, a storage capacity, and a moghancement.

Associated Elements, Elemental Strengths, Storage, Moghancements

For starters, every piece of furniture has an associated element (e.g. fire, earth, water, wind, ice, lightning, light, dark) and the strength of the element on each piece varies. For example, most flowerpots only have an elemental strength of 1 while other objects, like a workbench, will have an elemental strength of 6. Examining a piece of furniture will tell you its associated element (look to the bottom-right corner), but not its elemental strength.

In most cases, to determine an object’s elemental strength, all you’ll need are few dozen flowerpots. Place the object whose elemental strength you want measured in your moghouse. Now, add a flowerpot (or similar item) with a conflicting element and an elemental strength of 1. Keep adding more of that same item until their combined elemental strength overpowers the object whose strength you want measured. However many flowerpots you have in your moghouse determines the elemental strength of the object (minus one).

Each piece of furniture also has a storage capacity; examining a piece of furniture will tell you its capacity (look for the STG: in the bottom-right corner). The bigger the number, the more Storage you will have access to in your hometown moghouse. Please keep in mind that Storage is not accessible when staying in other realm’s rent-a-room.

Last, but certainly not least, each piece of furniture has a hidden (or not so hidden) moghancement. Often, the furniture’s associated element is a clue as to the possible moghancement, but not always. The only way to tell for certain is to strip your moghouse of all but one piece of furniture and see which moghancement your moogle announces (e.g. fishing). Some moghancements will remain hidden despite your moogle and some items have no moghancements whatsoever.

Harmonizing Your Layout

Now, to understand how this all works harmoniously:

No matter what, you can only have one moghancement at a time. If you have several pieces of furniture with identical associated elements, the object with the highest elemental strength determines the moghancement that you’ll receive. For example, flowerpots have an earth elemental strength of 1 and a fishing moghancement. Putting ten flowerpots in your moghouse would give you a combined earth elemental strength of 10 (one point per pot) and a fishing moghancement. Adding a workbench, which has an earth elemental strength of 6, would give you an overall earth elemental strength of 16, but would change your moghancement from fishing to gardening (because six is greater than one).

If you have several pieces of furniture with conflicting associated elements, the moghancement you’ll receive depends on which element is dominant in your layout. To determine which element will be dominant in your moghouse, add up the elemental strengths of each piece of furniture. Please keep in mind the elemental chart; wind is strong against earth, light is strong against dark, fire is strong against ice.

If you have pieces of furniture in your moghouse with equal and opposing elemental strengths, you will get no moghancement. For example, two flower pots with a combined earth elemental strength of 2 will be evenly cancelled by one flower stand with a lightning elemental strength of 2.

Elemental Fields and Their Effect on Crafting

If you have several pieces of furniture in your moghouse with the same associated element, you can increase the “aura” or the “elemental field” of your moghouse. For example, placing several flowerpots in your moghouse, a workbench, and an oak table (all with earth elemental strengths) can significantly increase your moghome’s elemental field.

  • · A combined strength of 1-50 gives you a faint elemental energy.
  • · A combined strength of 51-100 will give you a powerful elemental energy.
  • · A combined strength of 101+ will make your moghouse be filled with elemental energy.
  • Adding furniture with conflicting elements and strengths can significantly diminish this effect.
  • Your moghouse’s elemental field can have effects outside those that influence your moghancement. For instance, crafters often will rearrange their moghouse depending on the type of crystal they’re using. Those who attempt a lot of desynthesis will often flood their home with furniture that has an associated lightning element, not to mention those that give a desynthesis moghancement. However, this can also have an adverse effect. Those who have a strong water elemental field in their moghouse will often report a higher failure rate when crafting with fire crystals.

The higher the elemental field in your moghouse, the less chance you have of failure and when failure does occur, you have less chance of losing items.
